CALLING ALL ASTRONAUTS:- POST MODERN CONSPIRACY

Image

”Calling All Astronauts are a London based sociopolitical Anarcho Electro Goth Punk 3-piece” (Bandcamp)

”I was just about to go to sleep when i decided to hunt this album down on Spotify, i found it and sleep became a distant memory. The serotonin in my system ran for cover from an onslaught of Adrenalin that had me sitting up in bed like a reanimated corpse or a blow up doll with a hole in it that has just been pumped full of air. As soon as the pump stopped pumping i deflated back into the realm of dreams……..”

”This is a great Album!! it is punchy & grabs your attention without being bullying!! On first listen my impression was ”Vision Thing” by The Sisters Of Mercy, then i got Girls Against Boys from the grinding guitar riffs & then i got PWEI from other elements in the production. This album is great for Spinning which is something i do a lot & stand out tracks for this are :- ”Someone like You” , ”Freaks” & my favourite track ”What’s So Good About?” This track is hip grindingly gorgeous!! The interplay between the guitar & the vocal just gets me every time! The bass is simple but simple is all that is needed to finish off the mix, great track indeed!!!”

”I’m not really lyric focused when i listen to music, the sounds entering my ears are all that is required to evoke feelings, moods, images etc. That’s not to say the words are not important, they are but i like to create my own meanings so the music becomes personal & part of my inner soundtrack to life. Having said that, with a few more listens of this album understanding of the inner world of Calling All Astronauts will become more apparent.”

”For now i will sum up by saying that this 48 minutes of ear shagging brilliance!!”

CHRISTIAN DEATH LIVE AT THE GARAGE, LONDON, 14/5/2014

CATASTROPHE BALLET

”I’ve not seen Christian Death in London for over 12 years i think! The last time i saw them it was at Dingwalls in Camden. A much better venue sound wise than the Garage in my opinion. The sound at the Garage is muddy, not good but Maitri’s bass stood out of the mix & illustrated what a great bassist she is!! Punchy, driving & right on the spot. If this does not inspire me to pick up my dusty bass after 18 months then i don’t know what will!! The set was good  apart from the muddy sound & Valor & Maitri being pissed on Cognac & wine so there were a few mistakes in the set. For those that paid to see them i would have thought a bit of restraint would have been good! The venue was not full, 100 or 120 die hards were there & even their enthusiasm seemed lacking at times.”

”The band came on at around 9:45pm and left the stage just after 11pm. There was going to be video projections to add to the narrative but due to technical issues that was abandoned, Valor asked the audience to use their imaginations in regards to visuals, how that went who knows! The original Catastrophe ballet i found to be weirdly surreal when i heard it in the mid 80’s, Rozz Williams vocals being mournful, lost, inverted,dreamy…..cold maybe, maybe warm… Valor’s rendition felt the same but different, the vocal styling was the same, the distinctive Christian Deathiness  was there but there was that subtle difference that something that separates the Rozz from the Valor….. i’d like to see them again, sober in a more intimate venue where the sound is richer and creamier to the musical palate. No disrespect to the sound guy but the sound did not do it for me, it was like listening to the sonic equivalent of watered down gravy!”

To sum up, this show was not as i expected and  not as it was when i saw the band over a decade ago but hey, we all have off nights, don’t we?
