”The sound was very good tonight, this was a good set!! There were a few people in the crowd who have been following the band for quite a while, but one of them was on stage playing bass, he was good he was! A different dynamic to the one I have been used to, no live drummer at the moment but the drum machine does it’s job! The vocals were as strong and  chocolatey  as usual, the bass accented, assertive and full! The new version of ”When The Lady Takes The Blame” is a prime example of this strength! The venue was not packed but there was a good crowd in, i’d say around 40 people!! Why Luxury Stranger are not playing to 100+ people on a regular basis is beyond me, they are one of the hardest working, dedicated and unpretentious bands around, playing gigs of around 100 minimum should be the norm!!!”

”I have never seen Cold In Berlin before! I enjoyed the experience, they reminded me of Black Moth, a bit doom and shoegazey, Doomgaze i’d say!! The lead singer, Maya spent a lot of time performing in the audience which was tricky for me with photos, it was dark in amongst the crowd and I don’t use flash,  but both parties fed off of each other and the energy blew the to be mentioned rustiness off the surface!  I met Maya in the loo after and she said they were a bit rusty, I said that if that is what they sounded like rusty then what the hell do they sound like on top form!!? I will try and get to see them again when they play with Christian Death in October at the 02 Islington!!”

Both of these bands deserve your attention!!!

”I had been looking forward to this gig for weeks!! When I arrived the venue was not even full yet so I found it easy to get down to the front so I could get into the photographers pit!! About 1o minutes after I entered the pit the first band came on, they were the Treason Kings from Leeds! I’d never heard of them before so I was curious as to what I would hear!! The first track was a rocking grunge like affair which I liked, it went down well with the crowd too!! All in all they sounded grunge like and in places Nirvana comparisons were quite apparent, in my opinion!! But I was not here to see them, this was L7 night!! I mean I had not seen them before and finally after 26 years I was, nothing else was in my line of sight really apart from them!!

The band kept the crowd waiting for a while, movement in the dark stage left and right got the crowd a whooping and cheering in anticipation, a few false alarms and then they were out, straight into  ”Deathwish” followed by ”Andres”. The set was peppered with tracks from albums ”L7” , ”Smell The Magic”, ”Bricks Are Heavy” and ”Hungry For Stink”. I didn’t notice anything from ”Slap Happy” though!! The heady mixture of punk/grunge/rock with anthemic hooks and hypnotic beats infused with a liberal sprinkling of ”Fuck You!!” had me time travelling back to the early 90’s and to squat parties and loads of booze and hash, If i could get it or the jumping about in my room on the bed extricating the frustrated rage and energy out of my system until I passed out in a heap covered in matted hair extensions and caked in sweaty makeup! My energy levels are no longer at that level  but I still have plenty of ”Fuck You’s!!” left in the tank!! Donita Sparks and Jennifer Finch still had some gas left in the tank though, the playing was tight and as strong as one would expect, there was even enough energy for some rolling around on the floor after track three which I captured on my camera but not very well!!Once I had taken my photos I left the pit and went up onto the balcony where I could see the how busy the venue was!! Standing was packed and the front part of the balcony was too, so I could sit in the VIP seats and drum the beats on the barriers!  One hour and 30 plus minutes of Brilliance!!”

”In the words of a fan on facebook:- ”100% Badass!!” ”

”The last time i saw Cauldronated they were bedding in a new bass play, a chap by the name of Andy Duke. The bass added to the sound but at that stage he felt like a session musician brought in to round out the sound, someone on the periphery! Tonight though Andy had melded into the duo, he had been ”Cauldronated” The alchemy had been completed, the sound was full, rounded and tight and everyone performed their task like the components in a well oiled machine! All the tracks sounded fresh to my mind, they were given fresh impetus, I was reminded of a Roman Legion, drilled and drilled and drilled until everyone is on message! All working together to push forward incrementally! Small but determined steps turning into giant leaps!! Blinkered determination, the world will be conquered, resistance is futile, you will submit!! The venue was empty, the venue filled and then emptied again! The magic was cast, the ritual was fulfilled, nothing else was wanted or needed, time to go….

……The warm up acts did  their work though! Schadegeddon with their punky folk cabaret played mostly to a small crowd who enjoyed the set, there was no cock on show tonight though, the sex ferret was covered up for some reason, maybe the band have modified their show to not cause offence and to attract a bigger audience or maybe bacchanalian show cockery is now old hat, who knows! Lady Jane’s Revenge are from Cornwall and they sound like Faith No More and i have not heard of them before! I was reminded of Nirvana, Mudhoney, the guitarist looking Cobain/Gilmouresque and the singer doing an impression of an Imam on speed!! Not really my cup of tea but i found the band enteraining!! I did not see Salt, i was satiated!! I’ll check them out another time.

PENTAGRAM!!

14/11/15

Venue:- 02 Academy Islington, London N1

”Brilliant!! Energetic, manic rock n roll from the 70’s and 80’s with a Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin Vibe , swirling guitars solos and a deep and heavy and sludgy bottom end, tinged with hint of psychedelia and mysticism!”

”I was out of he house by 8pm and i was home by 11pm! Sometimes times all you need 3 hours!!’

Dir En Grey Live at The 02 Academy Islington

No photo pass this time so it was poor mobile shots!!

”What can i say?? Dir En Grey have been around since the late 1990’s and their style has morphed over the years but it can be described as Prog Metal, Alt Metal, Nu Metal, experimental Metal with pop and Visual Kei overtones. Their name is made up of words from different languages and was originally used because it sounded ”right”. There is now no meaning other than being a signpost to the band itself. I got into Dir En Grey around 7 years ago and i’ve played the albums ”Withering To Death” , ”marrow To The Bone” and ”Ourobouros” to death!! There are nine albums in all, ”Arche” of which is the latest!!”

”I have finally ticked them off of my ”Got to see before i die” list, They are brilliant live, full of energy that is consumed by the crowd and then shot right back at them! at times i had shivers running down my spine due to the crowd noise and the vocal gymnastics of lead singer Kyo. I got the impression that there was a ”sonic 69” going on between artist and onlooker because the energy got quite intense.”

Poor Shot #3

”Kyo’s vocals are amazing!! he is a Japanese Diamanda Galas, one minute crooning, then screeching like a banshee then growling like a demon possessed before shifting into clean vocal mode and hitting the high notes like a well honed operatic diva. It was like watching a musical painting being painted right in front of me, the low and growling darks followed by high and clean whites all used to great effect to create an impressive whole!! The only thing that would get me to watch Baby Metal live is if Dir En Grey were headlining!! Seriously, they are that good!! i don’t care that i cannot understand Japanese, so what!! Everything else makes up for that and i can always use my imagination to conjure my own unique interpretations!! I’ll definitely be going to see these guys again!!!”
”The support band, Rise Of The Nothstar, not really my cup of tea and from where i was standing up iin the balcony when they played i did not get the full force of their sound. The youngsters liked them though, each to their own!!”

THE SISTERS OF MERCY AND BLACK MOTH LIVE!!

Venue:- The RoundHouse Camden 18th October 2015

The Sisters Of Mercy

The Sisters Of Mercy

”Now that i have slept and metabolized all the doom bar i drank last night and fortified myself with chicken livers i can offer my thought on last night proceeding s at the RoundHouse!! Black Moth were more enjoyable than The Sisters Of Mercy!!! Their sludge rock sound was a lot more interesting to listen to because it was fresher and played by a bunch of people that have not been hamstrung by age and thus still have a spring in their step. Andrew Eldritch sounded tired and it felt like he was going through the motions at times. The music did not have the oomph it had back in the day and all i could hear at times was screeching!! I mean seriously, how long can you keep on serving the same fare to your admirers without adding something new to the mix to freshen and spice things up?? But people are not there for new stuff are they? They are there to hear the old classics that were the sound track for a generation of goths back in the early eighties to the early nineties! ”First and Last and Always” , ”This Corrosion”, ”Lucretia” , ”Temple of Love” etc did not sound the same to me and i did not have the same level of enthusiasm for them as i used to. I think the high priest of Goth forgot the words to Temple Of Love too if i am not mistaken! I think i’ll listen on vinyl/cd/mp3 from now on and get my kicks that way!! i got bored after taking a few photos, which was bloody difficult from where i was standing on the right hand side of the stage not only because of the dry ice but also because of the jostling!! I could not be bothered to fight my way into the front row so i took some shots from the side and went in search of some ale, way too much ale for a Sunday night but hey….”

” I’m not at all familiar with Black Moths output but they sound a bit like BRMC crossed with Black Sabbath crossed with The Stooges. I just listened to their track ”Room 13” on YouTube, it’s a cracking track!! Harriet Bevan’s vocals sound like something i’ve heard before but when i think i have got my answer it slips back into the recesses of my brain with a teasing smirk accompanied by the refrain ”No you haven’t!! No you haven’t!!….!! They were definitely on the money tonight and looked like they were enjoying themselves, to start with not many people were in the auditorium to experience them but gradually the place filled up and eyes and ears aligned themselves in stage direction showing genuine interest!!”

”To sum up, i am glad i went!! i am glad to have had the experience!! It was nice to see a harem of Goths all under one roof and it was nice to bump into old friends from the past! will i go again in 10 years time, if Andrew Eldritch still has some energy left? Who knows……….”
