Mortiis Live!!

Date:- 28/5/2016

Venue:- The Garage, Highbury Corner, Islington, London, Uk.

Support:- Die Kur, Ventenner and Seraph Sin

”Short and sweet this review!! Just like the support for Mortiis, short and sweet! Just enough music from each band on the bill to wet the appetite and get us all ready for the main course! And the main course, Mortiis was mesmerising, in my opinion!! Havard Ellefsen is a seasoned performer, every movement, every dread shake, every shake of the finger was carried out with a purpose, nothing was put on, nothing felt fake, no going through the motions here, this was a real visceral spectacle that had the front row staring glassy eyed with satisfied smiles. Die Kurs set went down well with the crowd, another no nonsense set with no distracting frills or frippery followed by Ventenner, a band i have known about but not heard before! There set was hard and  pulse like with an interesting use of abrasive guitar textures floated of the top of the back beat like rusty gossamer strands! Seraph Sin, the penultimate band on i have never heard of before, i thought they were Italian but in actual fact they were from Scotland. There is a NIN vibe running through all the bands, some more than others, apart from Mortiis! They sound like, ermmm, well, Mortiis!!!”

”The last time i saw Cauldronated they were bedding in a new bass play, a chap by the name of Andy Duke. The bass added to the sound but at that stage he felt like a session musician brought in to round out the sound, someone on the periphery! Tonight though Andy had melded into the duo, he had been ”Cauldronated” The alchemy had been completed, the sound was full, rounded and tight and everyone performed their task like the components in a well oiled machine! All the tracks sounded fresh to my mind, they were given fresh impetus, I was reminded of a Roman Legion, drilled and drilled and drilled until everyone is on message! All working together to push forward incrementally! Small but determined steps turning into giant leaps!! Blinkered determination, the world will be conquered, resistance is futile, you will submit!! The venue was empty, the venue filled and then emptied again! The magic was cast, the ritual was fulfilled, nothing else was wanted or needed, time to go….

……The warm up acts did  their work though! Schadegeddon with their punky folk cabaret played mostly to a small crowd who enjoyed the set, there was no cock on show tonight though, the sex ferret was covered up for some reason, maybe the band have modified their show to not cause offence and to attract a bigger audience or maybe bacchanalian show cockery is now old hat, who knows! Lady Jane’s Revenge are from Cornwall and they sound like Faith No More and i have not heard of them before! I was reminded of Nirvana, Mudhoney, the guitarist looking Cobain/Gilmouresque and the singer doing an impression of an Imam on speed!! Not really my cup of tea but i found the band enteraining!! I did not see Salt, i was satiated!! I’ll check them out another time.

VENUE :- XOYO, Old Street ,London, 29/9/2015

Natasha Khan Of SexWitch

XOYO is an ok venue! It’s in Cowper Street which is a short walk from Old Street Roundabout so transport to/from the venue is pretty straight forward! The venue  consists of a ground floor bar which reminded me of a cross between Electrowerkz and The Lexington! It was a bit clean and sterile in my view, more to do with the crowd than the venue I think! Anyway, £9.50 for a pint of lager and a pint of coke! Good job Sainsbury was just around the corner so I could continue imbibing after the gig!

Anyway, SexWitch!! Not too long in existence so the set was short, around 30 minutes roughly! They are an amalgam of TOY and Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes! I’ve seen TOY and they are good, I’ve never seen Bat For Lashes but Natasha sounded very Siouxie Sioux with a Daemonia Nymphe like backing!! The venue was packed to the rafters and i suspect that many there were not aware of the similarities, but my impression was of the aforementioned bands without the visual spectacle, Ms Khan being sufficient eye candy for many. I’ll definitely go see this band again when their material is a little bit more extensive but I did come out of the venue feeling satiated and satisfied, but i just thought, just like food sometimes a smaller portion to start leads you to wanting more and i think i want more!!

The Underrunner, Rude Mechanicals & Alternative TV, 15/8/15

Venue:- The Dublin Castle, Parkway, Camden, London.

image

”The Underrunners have a new guitarist!! Yes they do!! For reasons of a creative nature Pete Vincent has left to be replaced by Andi Emm!! Where as Pete has a more laid back and slightly drunk 50’s vibe going on Andi brings a more urgent Death Rock feel to the proceedings. Not better just different!! The set included tracks from their current album ”No God No King” such as ”Joyrider” , ”Antihero” & ”Suspended” One thing i was not that impressed with was the sound though, no fault of the band but the mix sounded muddy and the bass a bit flat!! Not big fat and punchy as it usually is. The set by the band though was faultless and i wait to see what Andi brings to future shows once he has bedded in!!

”The Rude Mechanicals i have never seen or heard of before, what are they like you ask?? Well my first impression was something akin to Nina Hagen crossed with Lena Lovich! Weird, bizarre and surreal and disjointed and, erm, mechanical! Miss Roberts, the vocalist wore a blue frilly dress, a piled high wig finished off with a white face, i found her strangely charismatic!! Note to self, must see this band again!!”

I didn’t see much of Alternative TV!! i left the stage area to go to the loo and buy refreshments and when i came back the place was packed!! i couldn’t be bothered to fight my way through to the front so i listened from the back by the exit! What i heard was not my cup of tea so i left…

Dolls Live At The Lexington, Islington, London, 11/7/15

Dolls

Dolls

”Saturday night i decided to take up a friends offer of a ticket to go and see Dolls at The Lexington. I like the venue, its the right size for an intimate gig where you can see the stage with squinting from the bar and the venue is conveniently located on Pentonville Road just a short walk/bus ride from Kings X and Angel Stations.”

”I’ve seen Dolls before at  The Old Queens Head not far away, they are a duo consisting of Jade on Vocals/guitar and Bel on drums. Think White Stripes/K T Tunstall meets PJ Harvey and you get an idea of what their sound is like. A very good sound, very energetic and raunchy, the bass parts being filled in by the drums and the guitar.Dolls would conjure up the ideal sound track to movies in a similar vain to Natural Born Killers or From Dusk Til Dawn or even Kalifornia, texture wise think of unsanded wood and the cold touch of a freshly washed wine glass when you drag your fingers across the surface followed by a clear ”piiiing” when you flick the rim with a finger.” You see, i entered the Lexington’s downstairs bar bought an ale which was nice, made my way upstairs to the  venue area, watched Dolls who were on for about 30 minutes thereabouts and then descended the stairs for more ale, and stout. Sometimes you go out for a meal and you know instinctively that one course is enough!! That course hits the spot and anything else would lead to bloating. Dolls and ale, perfect!!!

You can check out their track ”Killing Time” here:-

Metal To The Masses at The Purple Turtle, Camden,29/3/15

M2TMQF2

I’m not too keen on the Purple Turtle!! It is always too hot, i always come out of the place wondering why i bothered to bathe before i left home! The place is humid, it is a venue that could double up as a green house, perfect for growing tomatoes and beans etc with the encouragement of heavy metal music. At least these tomatoes would be fortified with iron!! Sort out the air conditioning guys and i’ll become a lot keener!! That aside, i turned up to see Metal To The Masses quarter final 2. The ultimate prize for this speed,thrash,black,death,Tech,Trad metal riffery is a spot at this years BloodStock Festival. The bill included;-

NIGHT SCREAMER

SKARTHIA

RIP SANITY

WYCHHOUND

BEARFIST

RIP Sanity!

Bearfist, Skarthia and Wychound i missed but i did see the full set of RIP Sanity and Night Screamer. RIP Sanity have been embedding themselves into the quarter final stage for the past four years and  they expected to at least go one round further on this time! Alas it did not happen. The band did have two guitarists at one stage but Az left for personal reasons and in my opinion they need another guitarist to fill this void. Sarah has too much to do and i think the sound is lacking a certain ooomph in that area. There is an over compensation by the other members in an attempt to rectify this! What do they sound like you ask!! ok i’ll tell you!! they sound a bit like Anthrax, a bit like Pantera, a lot like Megadeth and maybe some Slayer thrown in, are you happy now?? All are accomplished musicians who by their own admission were not on top of their game on  this ocassion. I’ve seen many of their other gigs and they were certainly on top of their game then, floating even!! We all have off nights, i did too, my photos were mostly blurred due to focusing issues  but hey, WHAT DOES NOT KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER!!!

The final word is from the band themselves:-

* We will not go quietly
* We will make our voices heard
* We’re here to make a stand
* We’ve drawn a line in the dirt
* We are tired of the spoon fed bullshit that we’re currently being served
* We can no longer just sit by and watch everything and everyone we love be sold for commercial gain
* We are angry and frustrated
* We want change
* We don’t want to be lied to anymore
* We are so sick of choking on the smoke
* We are cynical
* We want you to shut your mouths and wallets, and open your minds, eyes and hearts
* We want you to listen instead of burying your head in the sand
* We want humanity to win
* We will not go quietly

Night Screamer

Night Screamer i have never seen nor heard of before!!! I tasted them like i was tasting a bottle of quality wine! I got Iron Maiden, i got Deep Purple, i got hints of Sebastian Bach, Joey Tempest with subtle hints of Ronnie James Dio!! This band were awesome!! What a voice!! And the bass playing was on the money, i like the bassist!! She was good!! A band definitely worth seeing if you want a meat and two veg evening out, everything does what it says on the tin, it hits the spot and you leave rubbing your belly in a satisfied way!!

CAULDRONATED LIVE AT ANTICHRIST, THE COLOSSEUM, VAUXHALL, LONDON, 25/4/2014

Image

As per usual Cauldronated played a tight and professional set with no hiccups but to a sparse crowd that had not really warmed up yet because it was still early in the evening. They were the first band on at 10:30pm for a 30 minute set. Their music does not warrant an opening slot and would have been more appreciated if they had been put on second or even third. Alas myself and the band had no say in the running order so we had to make do. The second band on which were a blues duo had more of a response from the crowd because they were sufficiently warmed up & they even danced. I think familiarity was a factor. If Cauldronated were to play a set at AC in the future who knows what the response might be. All i can say is that exposure no matter how little is better than no exposure at all and at least punters will have left the venue after a hard nights perving with a new band name ringing in their ears!! Lets hope that curiosity leads them to future shows elsewhere!!

One thing to note about the set is this, Eva Menon suits a larger stage! She becomes herself, more expressive, more forceful, larger than life, as if shackles have been removed from her ankles and the room has been flooded with pure oxygen. What can i say about Dave? He knows the game, he’s on the money, doing his thing like a well oiled machine! The beating heart of this eight limbed beast!
