”Skinny Puppy were on form this evening sharing songs of protest, tracks that question, music that pisses off and provokes a reaction, unlike at a One Direction gig where the only reaction you’d get from me  is of moving quite swiftly towards the exit!! The kentish Town Forum was quite full, not as full as when i saw Rob Zombie as there was space at the back  you could still walk through but a good crowd none the less. This would be the first time i have seen Skinny Puppy since they played the same venue around 2005. Nivek Ogre came onstage wearing a hypodermic needle suit, an allusion to his past addiction that needed attention due to the needles coming out or bending. There was a triangular display showing projections behind Nivek which complimented the stream of consciousness matter of fact abrasive vocal delivery that was filtered through a vocoder. I always  found this vocal delivery sinister and at times disturbing but always fascinating! It’s like listening to someone being garroted whilst they are suspended inside a rusty  drainpipe dripping with rancid water. I can almost taste the rusting metal and the cold foulness of the water!! The sound mix was excellent and i found myself shoulder bopping through out the set, as if trying to create some more room for myself inside the aforementioned drainpipe !! Standout tracks that go my shoulders bopping were ”Fascist Jock Itch” , ”DogShit” , ”VX Gas Attack”, ”Worlock” and ”The Choke”. The sound was strong and the vocals did not disappoint in any shape or manner, this was a fully rounded set!! It is a shame that i found the Ventenner set disappointing!! In my humble opinion the sound mix was terrible, there was no sound separation and the bass sounded too loud. I stood stage left left, then right and finally centre but the sound still sounded awful!! I think Ventenner are a good band, think NIN/Numan and the new album ”InVidia” is really good from what i have heard so far!! Track one is a screamer!!! I have seen them before at The Hope & Anchor in Islington and the sound there was a darn sight better!! maybe on this occasion the mix was slapdash so as to not upstage Skinny Puppy????”

”One other thing:- is there any chance Skinny Puppy T shirts could be made out of a better quality cotton?? A softer brushed cotton perhaps?? Just saying!!”

ROB ZOMBIE LIVE!!

Venue:- The Kentish Town Forum, London.

Date:- 17th October 2016

”First off, I was bloody disappointed that I did not get a photopass!! But the person who was giving them out went to hospital  so obviously they had more important things to be attending to. I did however get in due to an amenable security guy ushering me in the back way and letting me blend into the crowd in an urgent manner!! The place was packed so I decided to stand near the bar stage right so I could leave my bags on the end of the bar!! I was surrounded all manner of people waiting for the action to start, Rob Zombie clones, tattooed rock chicks, spaced out dread heads and a clown!! The only place where clowns can’t be arrested at the moment, at a Rob Zombie gig!! So, I settled in,  bought a plastic stein of Carlsberg and readied myself!! With bright streaking lights and through a wail of screams, yelps and cheers Rob and band populate the stage and dive straight in to ”Last Of The Demons Defeated” from ”The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser” album. I had not listened to this new album so all the tracks played were unfamiliar!! I did recognise ”Superbeast” , ”Dragula”, ”Living Dead Girl”,  ”More Human Than Human” and ”Thunderkiss 65” Personally ”More Human Than Human” was laboured vocally,  there was no stamina for the rap I felt, I didn’t feel satiated by it so I  didn’t enjoy it that much but The cover Of The Ramones ”Blitzkrieg Bop” and Alice Coopers ”Schools Out” were brilliant, the mix was right and the vocals paced like one wave following another!! There was an allusion to the US election ”But no one is talking about Alien Abduction!!” Rob says, the crowd cheers and then straight in to ”Well, everyone’s fucking in a UFO”, another track from the new album. These tracks don’t seem as strong as those from other efforts, Hopefully they’ll grow on me. Another great track on the night was ”Ging Gang Gong De Do Gong De Laga Raga” from ”Venomous Rat Degeneration Vendor” Try singing that after a plastic stein of lager!! I did, I couldn’t lol!!”

”This show was a stripped down show with none of the costumes worn at earlier events, just corpse paint, tee shirts and flairs, a few plastic aliens to lob into the crowd and some beach balls!! The lights were bloody bright though, shutter speeds of 1/300 or above would have stopped the action nicely, I tried to get some from where  I was standing near the bar, not bad but not good either as you can see!! The rest of the photos are from my phone which are equally rubbish!! But the event was recorded which is the main thing!!”

”Anyway, to sum up, 1.5 hours of entertainment, some J5 riffing, plastic aliens and 2 encores, a good night!! I wasn’t keen on the t shirts though, not the price (£25) , if plain black cotton of a lighter gauge with just a small RZ embroidered logo was available I would definitely have bought one, that’s just me!!”

All in all a good show!!

”I had been looking forward to this gig for weeks!! When I arrived the venue was not even full yet so I found it easy to get down to the front so I could get into the photographers pit!! About 1o minutes after I entered the pit the first band came on, they were the Treason Kings from Leeds! I’d never heard of them before so I was curious as to what I would hear!! The first track was a rocking grunge like affair which I liked, it went down well with the crowd too!! All in all they sounded grunge like and in places Nirvana comparisons were quite apparent, in my opinion!! But I was not here to see them, this was L7 night!! I mean I had not seen them before and finally after 26 years I was, nothing else was in my line of sight really apart from them!!

The band kept the crowd waiting for a while, movement in the dark stage left and right got the crowd a whooping and cheering in anticipation, a few false alarms and then they were out, straight into  ”Deathwish” followed by ”Andres”. The set was peppered with tracks from albums ”L7” , ”Smell The Magic”, ”Bricks Are Heavy” and ”Hungry For Stink”. I didn’t notice anything from ”Slap Happy” though!! The heady mixture of punk/grunge/rock with anthemic hooks and hypnotic beats infused with a liberal sprinkling of ”Fuck You!!” had me time travelling back to the early 90’s and to squat parties and loads of booze and hash, If i could get it or the jumping about in my room on the bed extricating the frustrated rage and energy out of my system until I passed out in a heap covered in matted hair extensions and caked in sweaty makeup! My energy levels are no longer at that level  but I still have plenty of ”Fuck You’s!!” left in the tank!! Donita Sparks and Jennifer Finch still had some gas left in the tank though, the playing was tight and as strong as one would expect, there was even enough energy for some rolling around on the floor after track three which I captured on my camera but not very well!!Once I had taken my photos I left the pit and went up onto the balcony where I could see the how busy the venue was!! Standing was packed and the front part of the balcony was too, so I could sit in the VIP seats and drum the beats on the barriers!  One hour and 30 plus minutes of Brilliance!!”

”In the words of a fan on facebook:- ”100% Badass!!” ”

”I didn’t know if i’d make this show! I sent numerous emails to different agencies requesting photo passes and not one had the decency to email back with a positive or negative response, which i find is disgraceful!! Not knowing if i had got a pass or not i decided to go to the show anyway, with my not so good back up camera, i was not expecting a pass to be waiting for me, and a massive hangover from the night before. When i arrive at the venue the security assumed that i was press and ushered me inside the venue to get my pass, which was a good start!! I tell the girl behind the glass who i was working for and she looks through a long list, my name is not on it!! Another girl looks through the list again and again my name is not there! Finally she radios for advice and then picks up a clip board, what’s underneath? A photopass!! Brilliant i thought! Why can’t these people email confirmation, emailing is so easy and it takes no more than 30 seconds to send one, i know i’ve done it!!”

”Anyway, on to the show! Ministry had just taken to the stage when i arrived, i could hear the loud raptures of the crowd as the trademark abrasiveness commenced! I fought my way through the dense crowd to the front, entered the photo pit and took 31 photos with my shit camera for 3 songs! One photo i did not get was when the bassist flipped me the bird, the camera conked out temporarily! The band were up for a great show and so were the crowd, there was plenty of energy directed at the stage, lots of air punches and horn gestures! I’m not au fait with all Ministry’s out put but i remember NWO, Just One Fix, Stigmata and as an encore Psalm 69. Most of the tracks got my foot stomping and my head banging especially the aforementioned tracks!! There was a great energy in the venue and it was packed to the rafters. Thoroughly good show and i’m glad i went!!”
