INCONCESSUS LUX LUCIS

22/4/2017

Venue:- The Boston Music Rooms, Tufnell Park, London.

”These guys are like Magi!! The sounds that can be conjured from their guitars is pure magic. Sure other bands are just as competent with their instruments but the whole here is greater than the sum of its parts!! The image, the smells emanating from the stage and the production, it just does it for me. Inconcessus Lux Lucis are a great live band, they are raw and stripped down, monochromatic shades that emphasis rather than drown and dull!! A melodic sludge played out in the shadows!! If i ever get the chance to walk through London’s sewers then Inconcessus Lux Lucis is what i want played as my accompaniment!! Black is the canvas, the bass flicks paint like a heavy brush, the guitar offloads  paint laden wire flicked with abandon and the drums are  paint cans, lids removed and dropped from a great height!! There is something visceral going on here, it’s like my base needs are being catered to without all the sugary bullshit getting in the way!! Pure sucks out the pure!!”

”All i can say about this show was that it was a much better show than the previous show i saw last year at The Garage in Highbury Corner. This show should have been at the aforementioned venue but it was changed! I’m glad it was because sound mix was so much better! The set was as energetic as usual and workman like! Every note, every drumbeat every phrase of the vocals were on the money!! I thoroughly enjoyed the set and it’s energy and all three members of Mortiis exuded their own kind of charisma!!Most of the set was tracks from the latest Album called ”The Great Deceiver” Standout tracks for me include:- ”Too Little Too Late” , a piece of aural art that has the feel of a piece created using varying layers of different grade sandpaper, rough in places and as smooth as a finished door knob! The last 60 seconds is pure head nodding bliss!!  ”The Great leap” is another awesome track!! 1-2-3-4 THUMP 1-2-3-4 THUMP with a cheese wire sinew winding it’s way through the body, i have an image now of a body on kebab skewer flailing and thumping to the bass!! ”The Ugly Truth” is very Rob Zombie/Ministry, it has a ”Jesus Built My Hotrod” feel to it!! ”Demons Are Back” I’m burning up inside the demons are back!! This just sums up how  i feel today!! And this is the best medicine to purge!!! The whole track is a catharsis but from around 3 minutes 30 i start to feel the demons getting weaker…..”

KAMPFAR LIVE!!!

Venue:- The Underworld, Camden Town, London, UK.

Date:- 25/10/16

KAMPFAR!!!!! An Old Norse Battle Cry meaning Odin or Wotan!!

Abraham Ben Jacob:- ”Never before have  I heard uglier songs than those of the Vikings (in Slesvig). The growling sounds coming from their throats reminds me of dogs but more untamed!” 10th Century AD

”The last time I saw Kampfar was last year when they played at the Dome in Tufnell Park supporting Gorgoroth! They grabbed my attention more than Gorgoroth, the energy was captivating, the rhythm was intoxicating and presence of all the band was stereolithic! A brief biography, the band has been in existence since 1994 when  Dolk  parted ways with his previous band called Mock. The band started as a duo and their first release was a self titled mini cd followed by their first album in 1997 called “Mellom Skogkledde Aaser”. These guys are no wall flowers, you know they are there, they pull your attention and it is kept for the duration of the gig!! I’ve always found Kampfar spine chilling, i’m not fully up to speed with all their catalogue yet but what I have heard is sublime!! ”Mylder”, 6 minutes of raging goodness accented by a teasing airy and somewhat mocking flute, ‘Swarm Norvegicus’, rousing and bombastic, the guitar cutting through you like cheese wire! In fact the whole experience of listening to Kampfar is like listening to an opera whilst being garrotted with cheese wire, and loving it!! Dolks guttural utterances  mirroring your own gurgles as the blood spews out of your neck!!  I was on a bus the day after this gig listening to ”Glory Ablaze” and I was in a trance, a look of insular musings on my face and a propensity for uncontrolled jerking, I had a need to break out and thrash my head about but I could not, I was on a bus! Any one looking at me would have thought I  was mad! I was having an experience, a visceral experience, it was  like an orgasm but better, prolonged!! The set list for tonight gig consisted of tracks from albums, in no particular order:- ‘Kvass’ (2006), ‘Profan’ (2015), ‘Djevelmakt’ (2016). I was listening to ‘Lyktemenn’ whilst writing this, I went into a trance again, sorry!! And the other albums are:- ‘Heimgang’ and ‘Fra Underverdenen’. After skimming through all the albums online I have found some gems to explore in more detail and to be honest although there are some tracks that I don’t like the majority are satisfyingly brilliant, for example ”Hymne” from ”Mellom Skogkledde Aaser” and ”Troll, Dod Og Trolldom”  from the album ”Fra Underverdenen”.

”I know what  I like and I like this band!!”

ROB ZOMBIE LIVE!!

robzombiecolor1wickedspins

Venue:- The Kentish Town Forum, London.

Date:- 17th October 2016

”First off, I was bloody disappointed that I did not get a photopass!! But the person who was giving them out went to hospital  so obviously they had more important things to be attending to. I did however get in due to an amenable security guy ushering me in the back way and letting me blend into the crowd in an urgent manner!! The place was packed so I decided to stand near the bar stage right so I could leave my bags on the end of the bar!! I was surrounded all manner of people waiting for the action to start, Rob Zombie clones, tattooed rock chicks, spaced out dread heads and a clown!! The only place where clowns can’t be arrested at the moment, at a Rob Zombie gig!! So, I settled in,  bought a plastic stein of Carlsberg and readied myself!! With bright streaking lights and through a wail of screams, yelps and cheers Rob and band populate the stage and dive straight in to ”Last Of The Demons Defeated” from ”The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser” album. I had not listened to this new album so all the tracks played were unfamiliar!! I did recognise ”Superbeast” , ”Dragula”, ”Living Dead Girl”,  ”More Human Than Human” and ”Thunderkiss 65” Personally ”More Human Than Human” was laboured vocally,  there was no stamina for the rap I felt, I didn’t feel satiated by it so I  didn’t enjoy it that much but The cover Of The Ramones ”Blitzkrieg Bop” and Alice Coopers ”Schools Out” were brilliant, the mix was right and the vocals paced like one wave following another!! There was an allusion to the US election ”But no one is talking about Alien Abduction!!” Rob says, the crowd cheers and then straight in to ”Well, everyone’s fucking in a UFO”, another track from the new album. These tracks don’t seem as strong as those from other efforts, Hopefully they’ll grow on me. Another great track on the night was ”Ging Gang Gong De Do Gong De Laga Raga” from ”Venomous Rat Degeneration Vendor” Try singing that after a plastic stein of lager!! I did, I couldn’t lol!!”

”This show was a stripped down show with none of the costumes worn at earlier events, just corpse paint, tee shirts and flairs, a few plastic aliens to lob into the crowd and some beach balls!! The lights were bloody bright though, shutter speeds of 1/300 or above would have stopped the action nicely, I tried to get some from where  I was standing near the bar, not bad but not good either as you can see!! The rest of the photos are from my phone which are equally rubbish!! But the event was recorded which is the main thing!!”

”Anyway, to sum up, 1.5 hours of entertainment, some J5 riffing, plastic aliens and 2 encores, a good night!! I wasn’t keen on the t shirts though, not the price (£25) , if plain black cotton of a lighter gauge with just a small RZ embroidered logo was available I would definitely have bought one, that’s just me!!”

All in all a good show!!

”I had been looking forward to this gig for weeks!! When I arrived the venue was not even full yet so I found it easy to get down to the front so I could get into the photographers pit!! About 1o minutes after I entered the pit the first band came on, they were the Treason Kings from Leeds! I’d never heard of them before so I was curious as to what I would hear!! The first track was a rocking grunge like affair which I liked, it went down well with the crowd too!! All in all they sounded grunge like and in places Nirvana comparisons were quite apparent, in my opinion!! But I was not here to see them, this was L7 night!! I mean I had not seen them before and finally after 26 years I was, nothing else was in my line of sight really apart from them!!

The band kept the crowd waiting for a while, movement in the dark stage left and right got the crowd a whooping and cheering in anticipation, a few false alarms and then they were out, straight into  ”Deathwish” followed by ”Andres”. The set was peppered with tracks from albums ”L7” , ”Smell The Magic”, ”Bricks Are Heavy” and ”Hungry For Stink”. I didn’t notice anything from ”Slap Happy” though!! The heady mixture of punk/grunge/rock with anthemic hooks and hypnotic beats infused with a liberal sprinkling of ”Fuck You!!” had me time travelling back to the early 90’s and to squat parties and loads of booze and hash, If i could get it or the jumping about in my room on the bed extricating the frustrated rage and energy out of my system until I passed out in a heap covered in matted hair extensions and caked in sweaty makeup! My energy levels are no longer at that level  but I still have plenty of ”Fuck You’s!!” left in the tank!! Donita Sparks and Jennifer Finch still had some gas left in the tank though, the playing was tight and as strong as one would expect, there was even enough energy for some rolling around on the floor after track three which I captured on my camera but not very well!!Once I had taken my photos I left the pit and went up onto the balcony where I could see the how busy the venue was!! Standing was packed and the front part of the balcony was too, so I could sit in the VIP seats and drum the beats on the barriers!  One hour and 30 plus minutes of Brilliance!!”

”In the words of a fan on facebook:- ”100% Badass!!” ”

Mortiis Live!!

Date:- 28/5/2016

Venue:- The Garage, Highbury Corner, Islington, London, Uk.

Support:- Die Kur, Ventenner and Seraph Sin

”Short and sweet this review!! Just like the support for Mortiis, short and sweet! Just enough music from each band on the bill to wet the appetite and get us all ready for the main course! And the main course, Mortiis was mesmerising, in my opinion!! Havard Ellefsen is a seasoned performer, every movement, every dread shake, every shake of the finger was carried out with a purpose, nothing was put on, nothing felt fake, no going through the motions here, this was a real visceral spectacle that had the front row staring glassy eyed with satisfied smiles. Die Kurs set went down well with the crowd, another no nonsense set with no distracting frills or frippery followed by Ventenner, a band i have known about but not heard before! There set was hard and  pulse like with an interesting use of abrasive guitar textures floated of the top of the back beat like rusty gossamer strands! Seraph Sin, the penultimate band on i have never heard of before, i thought they were Italian but in actual fact they were from Scotland. There is a NIN vibe running through all the bands, some more than others, apart from Mortiis! They sound like, ermmm, well, Mortiis!!!”

WARDRUNA:- YGGDRASIL

”What can i say about this album?? To put it bluntly is ear carressingly sublime!! An awesome listen, spine chillingly brilliant!! Uplifting!! Energising!! I feel alive as if the universe is speaking to me through the mediums of primitive deer-hide frame drums, Kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn, lur and etc. There is something pure about this music that transcends all pretentions!! This is music made from the heart!! It sounds very Norse but very Greek too and at times very Native American!! What all the aformentioned have in common is the cultivation of dreams, they open doors into the other world! Time slows and problems splinter and all seems fine. I can listen to this for hours with or without stimulation because i am already suggestible!”

”This album is part of a trilogy called Runejod which is a music interpretation of the 24 runes or what some would call the Elder Futhark. Some of the recording was done outside in places that are significant to the individual rune and this gives each piece an added gravitas! Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Einar Kvitrafn Selvik , vocalists Kristian Espedal (aka Gaahl) and Lindy-Fay Hella have come together and created a piece of pure magic  without veering off into tedium. Yggdrasil’ is also graced with guest appearances by renowned Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and Iceland’s leading rímur singer Steindór Andersen.”

If you like a heady mix of earthy and otherworldly atmosphere then i recommend this!!
